Smart Shopping with the Discount Calculator
Whether it's Black Friday, a seasonal clearance, or a one-time coupon, calculating the final price of an item in your head can be tricky—especially when sales tax is involved. This tool takes the guesswork out of shopping by showing you exactly how much you save and what your final receipt will look like.
How to Use the Calculator
- Original Price: Enter the price on the tag before any discounts.
- Discount Percentage: Enter the percentage off (e.g., 20%, 50%).
- Tax Rate (Optional): If your local area adds sales tax at the checkout, enter that percentage to see the true final cost.
The Formulas Behind the Numbers
Step 1: Find the Savings Amount
- Savings = Original Price × (Discount % / 100)
Step 2: Find the Sale Price (Pre-Tax)
- Sale Price = Original Price - Savings
Step 3: Add Sales Tax (If applicable)
- Tax Amount = Sale Price × (Tax Rate / 100)
- Final Total = Sale Price + Tax Amount
Examples of Common Discounts
- "Buy One Get One Free": This is effectively a 50% discount on each item if you buy two.
- "Buy One Get One Half Off": This is a 25% discount on the total when buying two identical items.
- "20% Off + Additional 10%": Note that these aren't usually additive (30%). Usually, companies take 20% off the original price, and then 10% off that new lower price. This is called a "stacked" discount.
Why Use This Tool?
- Budgeting: Know if you can truly afford that "deal."
- Comparison: See which coupon code gives you the better final price.
- Transparency: Business owners can use this to quickly calculate sale tags for their store.
