What is Markdown?

Markdown is a simple markup language that may be used to create styled content in a plain text editor. Markdown was designed in 2004 by John Gruber and Aaron Swartz as a markup language that is appealing to human readers in its source code form.

Blogging, instant messaging, online forums, collaborative software, documentation pages, and readme files all use Markdown.

Markdown, in summary, makes it easier to prepare text for web pages since its tags are simpler than HTML and instantly convert to HTML. This implies you don't need to know HTML to write on the web because Markdown automatically converts your tags to HTML.
